Darkside Labor Day Marathon

Luther Glass Park, Peachtree City, Georgia               September 2, 2013

A record number of runners—48--turned out for the third and final Darkside Marathon of 2013.  Although the weather could best be described as warm and muggy, a cloud cover provided just enough relief to allow the majority of the runners to finish before the sun broke through not long after the noon hour.  Kim Ruple and Doug Cassiday proved to be the fastest marathoners of the day, easily outdistancing the other runners in their respective gender for top honors. In the accompanying 25K event, Lauren Alonso and Michael Dunn earned the accompanying bragging rights for finishing first among the women and men, respectively.  In both events the overall winners were women, and as much as the editor would have liked to title these results ‘Ladies’ Day’ he opted not to, seeing as he used it before under similar conditions for a prior event.  Way to go, ladies!  The unofficial but as official as they’re ever going to get results follow:

Darkside Memorial Day Marathon & 25K
Unseasonably cool weather resulted in the largest turnout for a ‘Free Marathon Series’ event in club history when 43 runners turned out at Luther Glass Park on the last Monday in May to run, walk and mingle on our famous and oft-used 5.18-mile loop through Peachtree City.

Warren Spradlin and Beth McCurdy finished first among the men and women, respectively in the marathon, while Steve Bothe and Kim Ruple took the top spots in the 25K (repeating their performances at last months’ Running Dead Ultra).  Beth, also a winner in the New Year’s Day Marathon has a chance of winning The Grand Slam Award, created in 2012 by Victor Kariker for the first Darksider—male or female—to win all three marathons (the third being on Labor Day) in a calendar year.

Runners from several states showed up for the event (much appreciated!), some of them leaving with not only a finisher’s medal but a lifetime membership in the Darkside as well.

Eight is Enough
 Darkside 8-Hour Run
Moreland, Georgia
  May 4, 2013

The 11th edition of the Darkside 8-Hour Run proved to be the oddest one yet.  This annual event has been held on a rubberized 400-meter track and a .423-mile asphalt path around a pond.  It has started at 7 a.m., 4 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., the latter in anticipation of a ‘sunrise finish’ at 6:15 a.m. the following morning.  It’s experienced temperatures in the low 70’s to temperatures in the high 90’s.  There have been occasional encounters with wind and rain and one particularly frightening encounter with monsoon-like conditions with a little thunder and lightning thrown in for good measure that required a one-hour ‘time out’ until nature had restored order.

But this year’s event was conducted on a 1.02-mile circular asphalt ‘driveway’ in the beautiful environs of Bear Creek Farm in Moreland, Georgia on May 4 (7 a.m. start).  The weather was true Darkside weather: steady rains throughout the day with occasional (and frequent) downpours, wind and unseasonably cold temperatures in the mid’40’s.  Fortunately for the volunteers (and the runners as they finished) there was a fireplace in the outdoor pavilion serving as race headquarters (A roaring fire in Georgia in May?  Go figure.).

Twenty-nine brave souls (23 runners, six volunteers) withstood all nature had to offer.  Rico Dorsey and Susan Hornbuckle led the men’s and women’s divisions with 40.8 and 35.7 miles, respectively.  Teresa Chandler, the women’s second place finisher ended up with 32.68 miles, a personal best for distance.  Mike Smith finished second amongst the men with 35.7 miles.

The runners had plenty of praise for the course afterwards that were compiled in a thank you note to our hosts Hal and Linda.  We hope to return to this same venue for next year’s event; we hope you will join us.

The Running Dead Ultra
42.6 Miles of Heaven…and Hell
Senoia, Georgia
April 7, 2013

The first Running Dead Ultra was held along the beautiful and rolling country roads of Senoia, Georgia.  For those of you who are fans of the television show The Walking Dead, you may recognize Senoia by its stage name, ‘Woodbury.’

The course was laid out so that the runners could enjoy the beauty of Coweta County while getting a tour of some of the more memorable locations and venues where prominent scenes from the first three seasons of the television show were filmed.  Runners ran through the heart of ‘Woodbury’ four miles into the race, then five miles later running along a remote cemetery (added bonus: a surprise visit from our volunteer zombie that put a little spring in every runner’s step) before heading out into the countryside for the remaining 50 kilometers.

The race began with one simple rule for the runners: Please do not feed the zombies.

Steven Both and Kim Ruple, both of neighboring Peachtree City were the Male and Female ‘Survivors.’  The Race Director was pleased losing only three runners during the race (listed as ‘Carnage’ in the results; Privacy rights forbid the Race Director from releasing any of the specifics as to the nature of the respective DNF’s ), since many of the runners slowed their pace late in the race due to a combination of heat, hills and fatigue.  Naturally the zombies—no doubt sensing a possible meal--were seen at various spots along the course later in the afternoon.

The race will continue next year with a new Race Director, Eric Stanley.  (Again, Privacy Rights forbid the release of any specifics regarding what may or may not have happened to this year’s RD.  Just know that he was out on the course a long time during the race.)
